• Lease is First of Three Under Five-Year Program with Fewest Leases in History
• CEA Urges New Safeguards To Ensure Adequate Future Lease Sales
WASHINGTON – Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA), the leading energy and environmental advocate for families and businesses, issued the following statement today after the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) announced its 2025 Gulf of Mexico Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Oil and Gas Lease Sale.
This is the first of three lease sales the Biden Administration approved a year ago in the 2024-2029 National OCS Oil and Gas Leasing Program.
“Consumer Energy Alliance is pleased BOEM introduced the first lease sale in the 2024-2029 program. OCS Lease Sales are integral to our nation’s reliable supply of energy and ensure that American consumers are provided with affordable and environmentally-friendly energy for years to come,” Consumer Energy Alliance President David Holt said. “Oil and gas produced in the Gulf of Mexico has the lowest carbon intensity in the world, so we were disappointed to see only three lease sales in this five-year program. Looking forward, CEA hopes to see safeguards introduced to protect OCS leasing, such as legislative action that would mandate as many lease sales as possible under future programs.”
The Gulf of Mexico accounts for 15% of America’s crude oil production, ensuring a consistent supply of affordable energy that lessens the economic impacts of inflation while maintaining our country’s energy security. The Biden Administration’s 2024-2029 Leasing Program proposed the fewest lease sales in program history, putting U.S. energy security at risk and further jeopardizing the supply of affordable, reliable domestic energy for American consumers.
