- Bipartisan bill ensures Mainers can choose how they heat their homes and power their businesses
- Maine joins the more than 25 states which bar individual municipalities from barring specific forms of energy
AUGUSTA, Maine – Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA), the leading energy and environmental advocate for families and businesses, today praised Maine Governor Janet Mills for signing into law a bill that preserves Mainers’ freedom to choose the heating and energy systems that best meet their needs.
The bill, LD 556, “An Act to Preserve Heating and Energy Choice by Prohibiting a Municipality from Prohibiting a Particular Energy System or Energy Distributor,” stops local governments from restricting consumers’ energy choices by voting to eliminate specific forms of energy.
“Governor Mills and the Maine Legislature have demonstrated bipartisan leadership by protecting Mainers’ fundamental right to choose how they heat their homes, cook their food, and power their businesses,” Consumer Energy Alliance Northeast Executive Director Marc Brown said. “At a time when energy affordability and reliability are critical concerns for families and small businesses across Maine, this law ensures consumers – not governments – will decide which energy systems work best for their needs. This is a victory for bipartisanship, common sense and affordable, reliable energy.”
With this law, Maine joins the more than 25 states which have laws barring individual municipalities from banning specific forms of energy at the local level.
