Georgia’s Energy Edge: How Natural Gas and Nuclear Keep Power Affordable and Reliable

SHARE

When families flip a switch, they expect the lights to come on. When small businesses open their doors, they count on affordable electricity to keep customers comfortable and operations running. In Georgia, that expectation has been met thanks to a strong foundation built on always-on energy sources like natural gas and nuclear power.

Georgia’s Energy Backbone

In 2024, natural gas and nuclear together provided nearly three-fourths of Georgia’s total electricity generation. Natural gas led the way with 41% of the state’s power, while nuclear contributed 34%—making Georgia the third-largest nuclear power-producing state in the nation. That balance of dispatchable, dependable power is a big reason why the state has avoided the grid challenges seen elsewhere.

Beyond electricity, natural gas also heats more than one in three Georgia homes (36.6%), delivering comfort and affordability to households during colder months. Families don’t have to worry about whether the sun is shining or the wind is blowing—their homes stay warm and their bills stay manageable.

Meeting Big Demand, Affordably

Georgia ranks among the top 10 states in the nation in overall energy consumption. Yet despite its size and growth—Georgia has the eighth-highest population in the country—per-person energy use is lower than in most states thanks to its mild climate and efficient energy systems. That means families and businesses are benefiting from a system that balances demand with affordability and cleaner energy.

For small businesses, this reliability is more than a convenience—it’s a lifeline. Restaurants, manufacturers, and local shops can’t afford power disruptions. Affordable and steady energy keeps costs predictable, supports job growth, and ensures local economies remain competitive.

Why Consumers Should Care

Energy debates often feel distant, but their impact shows up every month on utility bills and at the grocery store. When reliable sources like natural gas and nuclear carry the load, consumers benefit from lower prices, fewer disruptions, and cleaner air. Without these always-available resources, Georgia families could face higher costs and more uncertainty.

Looking Ahead

As energy demand continues to rise nationwide, Georgia provides an example of how smart choices can pay off. By relying on natural gas and nuclear—while also integrating renewable resources where they make sense—the state has built a diverse, balanced mix that works for consumers.

Maintaining and expanding this foundation will be key. Policies that support investment in natural gas infrastructure and nuclear innovation will ensure that Georgia families and businesses continue to enjoy affordable, reliable, and cleaner energy for decades to come.
