Redefining Florida’s role in the digital economy

Beyond their role in supporting our nation’s digital infrastructure, data centers deliver substantial economic value. In Loudoun County, Virginia, for example, data centers occupy just 4% of commercial land parcels but generate 38% of all general fund revenue. That revenue has grown steadily, adding more than $100 million annually, funding schools, public services and allowing the county to lower its real property tax rate to the lowest in Northern Virginia.

Florida could also achieve this kind of return. A one-gigawatt facility here is projected to create more than 5,300 permanent jobs in information technology, engineering and operations, contribute $2.6 billion in annual economic activity and generate over $400 million in state and local tax revenue every year.

Growth like this is transforming communities across the country. In Grant County, Washington, property tax revenues increased more than twelvefold after data center development. The town of Quincy in Grant used that growth to build a new school, a new hospital and a new fire station, all while boasting a levy rate reduction of 70%.
