Powering Our Families, Protecting Our Future

ENERGY FOR NEW MEXICO’S FUTURE

Everyday life in New Mexico depends on the systems we rarely see — the pipelines, transmission lines, and facilities that keep power flowing to homes, schools, and small businesses across the state. These networks are what make modern life possible, from heating classrooms in the winter to keeping hospitals running and groceries cold in the summer.

As our state grows, so does the need for stronger, smarter infrastructure that can keep up with rising demand. Building and maintaining that backbone is how we ensure that energy stays affordable for families, reliable for communities, and ready for the challenges ahead.

INFRASTRUCTURE THAT WORKS FOR EVERYONE

In New Mexico, energy costs shape daily life. When prices rise, families feel it in their budgets and small businesses see it in their bottom line. That’s why keeping energy affordable and predictable is vital to our communities.

By investing in modern infrastructure—like pipelines and local generation—we can keep prices steady and energy flowing safely to every home, farm, and small business. Affordable, reliable energy means parents can focus on putting food on the table, farmers can keep their operations running, and local economies can stay strong through good times and bad.

America’s 305,000 miles of natural gas transmission pipelines keep fuel moving efficiently and affordably to communities like ours. Expanding and maintaining this network is key to ensuring New Mexico’s families and businesses can build for the future on solid ground.

RELIABLE POWER FOR EVERY SEASON

New Mexicans know what it means to face both extremes — scorching summer heat and freezing winter cold. In every season, reliable energy keeps families safe and comfortable while ensuring that schools, hospitals, and small businesses can stay open.

Natural gas makes that reliability possible. More than 62% of New Mexico households rely on it for home heating, and it provides the steady power our electric grid depends on when renewables can’t meet demand. Maintaining and modernizing our pipeline network ensures that families and essential services have the dependable energy they need — when they need it most.

As new industries, data centers, and manufacturing facilities grow across the Southwest, energy demand is climbing faster than ever. A strong, reliable energy system helps New Mexico meet that growth without risking price spikes or shortages. It keeps the lights on, hospitals powered, and local economies running — through any season, in any weather.

INFRASTRUCTURE THAT BUILDS OPPORTUNITY

When New Mexico invests in energy infrastructure, it does more than deliver power — it creates opportunity. Each new pipeline or modernization project supports local workers, strengthens small businesses, and builds the foundation for long-term economic growth.

Oil and gas revenues provide roughly one-third of New Mexico’s state income, supporting schools, infrastructure, and early childhood education across the state. In fiscal year 2024, the state’s trust and permanent funds received more than $6.6 billion from energy production — money that helps pay for child care subsidies for nearly half of New Mexico’s children, expands early pre-K access, and funds free meal programs in low-income areas when schools are closed.

Those same revenues also support renovations and early learning facilities on Native lands, professional development for teachers, and expanded access to education in rural areas. In communities that have often been underserved or overlooked, these investments create long-term opportunity and stability.

The energy industry also helps sustain some of the highest-paying jobs in the state. The mining, quarrying, and oil and gas sector has the second-highest average weekly wages in New Mexico — paychecks that go directly back into local economies. Beyond direct employment, new construction and maintenance projects bring work for contractors, welders, truck drivers, and service providers in communities large and small.

At the same time, demand for reliable energy is rising faster than ever. Each new data center requires enough energy to power about 80,000 homes, and these massive facilities can be built in just over a year — far faster than the time it takes to bring new renewable projects online. Combined with growing use of artificial intelligence, electric vehicles, and high-tech manufacturing, America’s energy needs are surging. That growth depends on pipelines and infrastructure that can keep up.

Reliable energy networks give New Mexico a competitive edge. They help attract employers, strengthen local tax bases, and keep opportunity right here at home. When we invest in the systems that move energy safely and efficiently, we’re investing in the long-term strength of our communities.

KEEPING NEW MEXICO’S FUTURE ON SOLID GROUND

Energy keeps New Mexico running — powering our homes, our hospitals, our farms, and the small businesses that hold our communities together. As our state grows and energy demands rise, investing in safe, reliable infrastructure is how we keep that progress going.

Energy for New Mexico’s Future is about understanding the role energy plays in every part of our lives and ensuring the systems that deliver it stay strong. When energy is affordable, families thrive. When it’s reliable, communities stay secure. And when it’s built the right way, it creates lasting opportunity for generations to come.

Now is the time to plan ahead — to make sure New Mexico’s energy future is as strong and dependable as the people who call it home.
