Indiana’s Industry Advantage

Powering Industry, Manufacturing Growth

Across the Hoosier State, data centers are becoming the foundation of innovation, growing auto, pharmaceuticals and advanced manufacturing industries among others. With smart policies that support sensible growth of technology companies, Indiana can continue to bolster its position as one of the leading manufacturing states in the nation.

Powering Innovation in America’s Heartland

Building the Infrastructure of Tomorrow

Indiana stands at the intersection of America’s next era of innovation and economic growth. As demand for advanced manufacturing, data, artificial intelligence and cloud computing continue to accelerate, data centers are becoming the backbone of the modern economy, supporting everything from the auto industry, precision agriculture, healthcare, logistics, and national security.

Around the world, competitors like China are investing heavily to dominate the technologies that will shape the future. Here in the United States, especially in Indiana, we compete differently. Our strengths are rooted in reliable energy, a skilled workforce, world-class transportation networks, and a business climate that encourages investment and innovation. To remain competitive, Indiana must continue building the infrastructure that powers both our economy and our communities.

That includes responsible, sustainable and strategic investment in data centers.

Data centers are far more than buildings that store information. They are critical infrastructure that supports economic development, attracts private investment, creates high-paying jobs, and strengthens Indiana‘s position as a hub for advanced manufacturing and technology. These facilities generate significant local tax revenue, support construction and skilled trades employment, and work alongside utilities to modernize the electric grid, helping ensure reliable and affordable energy for homes, businesses, and industries across the state.

Indiana’s Opportunity: What the Data Shows

A new economic impact study by the Regional Economic Consulting Group shows that a single 1-gigawatt data center can deliver significant, measurable benefits to Indiana communities – from job creation to long-term tax revenue.

  • Billions in private investment
  • Strong local tax revenue generation
  • Approximately $26 in tax revenue for every $1 in local service costs
  • 1,000–2,000 peak construction jobs per project
  • High-paying permanent operations and technical jobs
  • Up to 6 indirect jobs for every direct data center job
  • Electric grid and transmission upgrades
  • Expanded fiber and broadband infrastructure
  • Skilled trades and workforce development opportunities
  • Increased business attraction and site competitiveness
  • Enhanced energy system reliability
  • Community investment and STEM partnership
  • Supports advanced manufacturing and logistics
  • Strengthens local tax bases
  • Leverages Indiana’s energy, land, and workforce advantages
  • Improves competitiveness for future investment
  • Builds critical infrastructure for long-term economic growth

Supporting Indiana Businesses for the Long Term

Indiana has always built big things, from farms and factories to roads, warehouses and power infrastructure. Data centers fit that same tradition. They bring private investment into communities, create construction and skilled-trade jobs, grow the local tax base, and help fund everyday priorities like schools, roads, EMS and public safety.

They can also help strengthen the electric grid without pushing new costs onto families. In Indiana Michigan Power’s service area, new rules say very large energy users, including data centers, must help pay for the grid upgrades needed to serve them, instead of passing those costs to existing customers. That means data centers can help fund new substations, transmission lines and grid improvements while spreading electric system costs across more users, which can help protect households and small businesses over time.
