COLUMBUS, OH – Today, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced it is designating the Line 5 Tunnel Project for special permit processing under Executive Order 14156 — a move strongly supported by Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA).
In response, CEA Midwest Director Chris Ventura issued the following statement:
“We applaud the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for recognizing what families, farmers, and manufacturers across the Midwest have known for years — that Line 5 is essential to our region’s energy security, economic strength, and energy affordability.
Designating this project for special permit processing under Executive Order 14156 is not only the right move, it’s a common-sense one. The Line 5 Tunnel Project will modernize critical energy infrastructure while reducing environmental risk and protecting our Great Lakes. This decision ensures a clear path forward for a project that supports more than 33,000 jobs and contributes nearly $20 billion in economic activity annually.
CEA’s own analysis found that shutting down Line 5 could lead to more than $5.8 billion in increased costs for Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Pennsylvania consumers.
We thank the Corps for cutting through the gridlock and putting the needs of American families and businesses first.”
