Consumer Group Announces 38 Public Officials and Candidates Signed Energy Consumer Protection Pledge

COLUMBUS, OH —Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA) Midwest Executive Director, Chris Ventura announced today that the groups Energy Consumer Protection Pledge has been signed by more than 38 Ohio elected officials and candidates. CEA’s pledge is an opportunity for candidates to sign and show their support for an all-of-the-above energy policy that protects the environment while also taking into consideration the benefits energy provides to Ohio households and small businesses. CEA believes that sound, bi-partisan energy policy helps all families, especially those living at or below the poverty line, with access to affordable and reliable energy.

“Ohio consumers have a right to know how their candidates feel about energy issues and their commitment to sensible energy and environmental solutions,” said Chris Ventura, Executive Director of CEA-Midwest. “That’s why we are pleased that Ohio candidates, from both parties, have signed the pledge, sending a clear message to those whom they intend to represent just where they stand on energy issues. We hope that other candidates across the state will join us in recognizing the need for policies that address all-of-the-above solutions to help make energy affordable for everyone.”

“The Energy Consumer Protection Pledge lays out logical yet important points about committing to sensible energy policies,” Ventura added. “Do you believe the environment should be protected and preserved as part of energy production and development? Should responsible energy solutions be supported instead of just saying no? How can we meet our energy needs to help lower prices, create jobs and protect our environment? These are critical questions that should drive thoughtful, civil discussions on energy in the coming months. Ohio consumers on both sides of the political aisle deserve good answers on these issues.”

Through this non-partisan initiative, CEA will help consumers identify those elected officials and candidates – regardless of party affiliation — who recognize that affordable energy costs and the environment are vital to communities across the nation. CEA’s Energy Consumer Protection Pledge and Campaign for America’s Energy movement target the forgotten voices in the energy discussion – American families and businesses who deserve responsible energy solutions and sensible energy prices.

Shale Boom, Pipelines a One-Two Punch in Knocking Out Air Pollution

Young man and his two sons on organic strawberry farm in summer, picking berries

David Holt reviews CEA’s recent report, Increased Environmental Benefits from Pipelines & Energy Development for Nation and New York, which looks at how America has safely and sustainably accessed and transported our natural resources.

Remember when environmentalists emphasized the importance of natural gas, accurately calling it a cleaner-burning fuel, the go-to resource for a greener environment?

This was just a few years back.

Times have, of course, noticeably changed, as these same environmentalists have morphed into all-out, anti-development, sometimes even violent, activists unwisely demanding the immediate end of all fossil fuel energy production and transportation – natural gas and its underground network of pipelines included.

More Natural Gas, Pipelines a Must for Hurricane Preparedness

Gulf Coast hurricane

CEA Florida’s Kevin Doyle looks at how hardening and diversifying our energy infrastructure is one of the best preparations the state can make before hurricane season returns.

Here’s one way to prepare for the upcoming hurricane season: Support an all-of-the-above state energy policy that includes traditional and renewable forms of energy. That includes the development and transportation of resources like natural gas and the underground network of pipelines that are the safest way to move them.

Such a strategy would strengthen an electric grid that an increasing number of tourists and residents are dependent on it. Florida’s population, now 20.6 million people, is projected to grow to 29 million by 2040, according to Census data and the University of Florida. That’s the equivalent of 7.5 million more homes by 2035, the Florida Reliability Coordinating Council projects.

Pipelines Help U.S. Electric Generation Gas Emissions Reach Lowest Levels Since 1990

Natural gas powerplant

CEA Mid-Atlantic’s Mike Butler talks about CEA’s latest report on emission reductions as a result of utilizing clean burning natural gas for power generation.

“We believe in a balanced and constructive all of the above energy policy that utilizes all of our resources – both conventional and renewable – but for far too long we’ve let activists lead a one-sided conversation with the public on energy development and delivery; these results speak for themselves, these incredible gains in air quality are a direct result of having pipeline infrastructure that can bring energy to where it’s needed.”

CEA Statement on Renewable Fuel Standard Reform

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA) President David Holt, released the following statement after a Capitol Hill press conference that Texas Sen. Ted Cruz held today as workers rallied for their jobs and Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) reform:

“Consumer Energy Alliance believes that it is time for Congress to take up legislation that will provide comprehensive reforms to the RFS program. The systemic problems that we see with the RFS arise out of faulty assumptions that Congress made when they expanded the program in 2007.  With the benefit of time, Congress now has a clearer understanding of the flaws in the program, and it is time for Congress to reform and fix the RFS.”

More Pipelines Needed to Meet Environmental Goals

Stack of pipelines

The Houston Chronicle recently looked at the environmental benefits of pipelines across the country and how integral a role pipelines have in protecting our environment.

Every sober proposal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions relies on gas-fired plants replacing coal to supplement renewable energy. That means building pipelines, like the Atlantic Coast Pipeline passing through Virginia, to ensure a reliable supply of gas.

Louisiana Lawmakers Eye Harsher Penalties in Pipeline Damage

Anti-Pipeline activist violence

Louisiana Democrat State Representative Major Thibaut is the latest state legislator to sponsor and see passage of legislation designed to stiffen penalties for the sabotage of critical infrastructure like pipelines after recent spouts of violence across the country.

Rep. Major Thibaut’s bill would classify pipelines as critical infrastructure, lumping them in the same category as power plants and water treatment facilities.

If the Democrat’s proposal becomes law, anyone who damages a pipeline could face up to 15 years in prison and someone who unlawfully enters pipeline land could get up to five years. The intention, he said, is to protect pipelines.

Consumer Group Pleased with Continued Progress on Important Line 3 Pipeline

Minneapolis, Minnesota from Stone Arch Bridge

COLUMBUS, OH – Today, Minnesota’s Administrative Law Judge (ALJ), Ann O’Reilly, issued her final recommendations to the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission on the Line 3 Pipeline. After the recommendations were released, Consumer Energy Alliance Midwest Executive Director, Chris Ventura, issued the following statement:

“After a lengthy hearing process, strong bipartisan majorities across Minnesota, including families, farmers, and small businesses have shown their support for this vital project which would bring much needed supplies of affordable, reliable energy.”

“The ALJ’s ruling brings us one step closer to modernizing Minnesota’s critical energy infrastructure. Pipeline projects like Line 3 are the most responsible way to deliver energy to our communities, and we call upon the Public Utilities Commission to quickly approve the replacement of Line 3.”

“Pipeline infrastructure is critical to ensuring that families and small businesses have access to the energy resources that power their lives and help them pursue the American dream. Pipelines like Line 3 represent billions of dollars in investment that will put our friends and neighbors to work and provide much-needed tax dollars to build schools, hospitals, roads and provide emergency services.”
