CEA Statement on New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu Energy Plan

Family Outside in a Field

CONCORD, N.H. — Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA) President David Holt, released the following statement after the release of New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu’s 10-year energy plan focused on lowering energy bills in the state and reducing energy costs in New Hampshire:

“CEA has long advocated for an all-of-the-above energy policy to ensure that America’s families, farmers, manufacturers, and small businesses have access to reliable and affordable energy that meets environmental goals, and we will continue to do so into the future. That’s why we appreciate Governor Sununu’s future focus on reducing costs for New Hampshire’s families, households, seniors and small businesses struggling under the heavy burden of New England’s electricity and home heating prices.

“We encourage other Governors and policymakers to take similar steps and recognize that we need a balanced energy policy that examines costs and reliability in addition to maintain a clean environment. CEA has been at the forefront in raising awareness to head the calls raised by non-partisan grid regulators in New England who have warmed we are in dire need of new pipeline and energy delivery infrastructure. This winter, New England households were at one point paying the highest price for natural gas in the industrialized world all because the region doesn’t have enough infrastructure and pipeline capacity to meet electricity and heating demand.”

New York Throws Another Natural Gas Pipeline Project Into Question

Senior Adult Couple Going Over Papers

Following a trend that can be seen over and over again, yet another pipeline project has been targeted by New York politicians for political posturing rather than scientific merit, environmental safety, and consumer benefit.

Williams said National Grid estimates that the Northeast Supply Enhancement Project could displace more than 3 million gallons of heating oil and help reduce annual emissions. The utility is already investing more than $200 million per year to convert its customers from oil to natural gas in New York City and Long Island, Williams said.

Consumer Advocate Releases Report on Environmental Benefits of Pipeline Infrastructure for the Nation and New York

Family at Sunset

ALBANY, NYConsumer Energy Alliance (CEA) today released a report titled, “Increased Environmental Benefits from Pipelines & Energy Development for Nation and New York,” to highlight the incredible strides and improvements in air quality that have been made possible by the shale energy revolution and our nation’s safe and reliable pipeline network. CEA’s report found that families across the nation are enjoying lower prices and enhanced energy security, as well as cleaner air – all of which were made possible by pipelines.

Highlights from the CEA report include:

  • From 2005-2015, natural gas use across the United States increased 24% while federal clean air data shows a dramatic drop in pollution:  sulfur dioxide (SO2) – down 66%; fine particulate matter – down 34%; and nitrogen oxide (NOX) – down 20%.
  • US greenhouse gas emissions from electricity generation are down to their lowest levels since 1990.
  • Total U.S. greenhouse gas emissions are down 13% from 2005 levels.
  • New York relies on natural gas to provide 44% of its power needs. According to federal air quality data, emission reductions for harmful pollutants like SO2 and NOX dropped by 98% and 87% respectively from 2000 to 2016 in New York.
  • More pipeline infrastructure is needed to meet continuing demand in Downstate New York and to support the deployment of more renewable power options in order to keep emissions down.

“This report highlights the often over-looked benefits our communities are receiving because of the U.S. energy revolution and enhances infrastructure and pipelines,” Mike Butler, CEA’s Mid-Atlantic Director, said. “We believe in a balanced and constructive all of the above energy policy that utilizes all of our resources – both conventional and renewable – but for far too long we’ve let activists lead a one-sided conversation with the public on energy development and delivery; these results speak for themselves, these incredible gains in air quality are a direct result of having pipeline infrastructure that can bring energy to where it’s needed.”

Consumer Energy Alliance Announces Support for Grow Louisiana Coalition’s Industry Day

New Orleans, Louisiana bridge over Mississippi

BATON ROUGE — Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA), a national advocate for families and consumers of energy, today announced its support for the Grow Louisiana Coalition’s 2018 Oil & Natural Gas Industry Day on Tuesday, April 24, 2018 at 12 noon at the A.Z. Young Park, Louisiana State Capitol. The event provides an opportunity for business leaders, government officials, and the community to learn more about the energy industry and the critical role it plays in Louisiana, now and in the future, through new technology and innovation that is vital for the sector to thrive and grow.

“Consumer Energy Alliance is pleased to support the 2018 Oil & Natural Gas Industry Day and efforts to educate families, communities and businesses about the critical role energy plays in the state,” said Link Browder, CEA Mid-Continent Executive Director. “It’s clear that a strong energy industry is a buoy to the entire state. It not only supports jobs for Louisianans in both energy and non-energy fields, but it also helps provide family supporting wages that allow families to pay down their mortgages, buy groceries, and fill prescriptions.”

A recent report released by the Grow Louisiana Coalition found that the energy sector is a giant economic engine for the state, continuing to be the foundation of the state’s economy.

Findings from the report include:

  • Oil and gas industries supported $72.8 billion in sales in Louisiana firms, generated over $19.2 billion in household earnings for Louisianans and supported 262,520 jobs in 2015.
  • On average, the job multiplier for these three industries was 4.4 – or for every job created in these sectors, 3.4 additional jobs are created in other sectors in the state.
  • Through the $19.2 billion in household earnings, the state government indirectly was able to collect an additional $1.34 billion in taxes, for a total of $2 billion boost to the state treasury.
  • The three industries directly paid $382.8 million in ad valorem taxes to local governments, enough tax revenue to support nearly 7,700 public school teachers in 2016.

Browder added, “Energy also generates revenue that helps the state fund essential public services and maintain and repair vital local infrastructure. Even tourism and recreation benefit from opportunities by making it more affordable to travel to the state’s featured attractions. Without the good-paying jobs, economic activity, and affordable, reliable fuel and electricity that are created by a strong Louisiana energy sector – families, communities, and businesses across the state would pay a heavy price.”

Support Offshore Exploration for Energy

Offshore energy production in the Gulf of Mexico

With conversations on offshore energy exploration happening across the state, CEA’s Link Browder looks at the possible benefits continued development in the Gulf will provide to Louisiana’s families.

Expanding offshore energy in the Gulf of Mexico could provide Louisiana with nearly 24,000 jobs, $2.2 billion in annual GDP and more than $1.4 billion in new state revenue. This would help revive better-paying jobs in both sectors, fund more education and infrastructure improvements, and increase economic opportunities — all must-haves for a state that, per reports, ranks low nationally in several quality-of-life categories including economy, education, affordability, opportunity, infrastructure and poverty.

Tim Page, Executive Director of CEA Southeast, looks at the benefits smart energy policies will have for working families and seniors on fixed incomes.

It’s bad policy to force those less fortunate to choose between heating their homes and fueling their vehicles when money is tight. The right policy is having an honest dialogue about our need for affordable energy and the optimal ways to bring it here.

Consumer Energy Alliance Statement on Private Solar Reform Legislation

LOUISVILLE, KY — Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA), a national advocate for energy consumers and households on fixed incomes, today released the following statement by CEA’s Vice President of State Affairs Brydon Ross after private solar reform legislation was recently recommitted:

“On behalf of CEA and families, households, and seniors on fixed incomes across the Commonwealth, we want to thank Representative Jim Gooch and Senator Jared Carpenter for their tireless efforts and support of HB 227. Unfortunately, the Senate missed an opportunity to advance this bipartisan legislation which would have grown solar responsibly, held existing private solar customers harmless, and ensured that future costs to maintain our electric grid would be fairly allocated.

“CEA is pro-solar, pro-grid, and pro-consumer. We strongly support the growth of emerging technologies that give customers options to offset their energy use and improve their environmental footprint. Our organization stands ready to work with the Kentucky Legislature and state officials as they consider developing solar policy in the future.”

Supersize It! Building Bigger Pipelines Over Old Ones Is A Good Idea

Pipeline connection to oil refinery

Forbes looks at how pipelines can be modernized and upgraded to continue to ensure American families, farmers, and manufacturers have access to affordable, reliable supplies of energy.

The idea of replacing an older small pipe with a wider new pipe is not new. But it really makes a difference when applied to the oil and natural gas pipelines that crisscross North America.

The concept of supersizing pipelines is taking hold in the United States and Canada to address the growing dearth of pipelines in areas where oil production is increasing but can’t get to the refineries in the Gulf.

Offshore Energy Resources Could Help the State

Offshore wind farm

Tim Page, CEA Southeast’s Executive Director, looks at how offshore energy development from wind turbines to offshore platforms could help improve economic conditions across the state.

If offshore energy is developed, it could be a boon for the entire state. Residents here spend an annual average of $3,763 on energy – a taxing number for many, especially the 15 percent of residents who regularly see a double-digit percentage of their income go toward energy expenses.
