Alaska Willow Project Approval a Hopeful Sign for Americans Tired of High Energy Prices, Failed Extremist Policies

Anchorage Alaska

Domestic Production Must Be a National Priority in Wake of Global Realities

WASHINGTON  – Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA), the leading energy and environmental advocate for families and businesses, issued the following statement in response to The Biden Administration’s approval of the $8 Billion Willow Project in Alaska.

“This approval is the product of compromise that balances the needs of American families and small businesses for affordable, available energy with a commitment to environmental improvement,” CEA President David Holt said. “Alaska’s National Petroleum Reserve is there for the purpose of maintaining our energy, economic and national security and the Willow Project is a prudent use of it.”

“The premise of much of the extremist ‘keep it in the ground’ activism against natural gas and oil is based on shaming, gaslighting and the presumption that most people do not want a cleaner environment. The fact is, all reasonable Americans want environmental improvement and affordable, reliable energy.”

“Projects like this that undergo years of permitting and approvals to ensure environmental and safety rigor are the way forward. Hasty changes to energy systems have failed everywhere they’ve been tried, from California to Germany, to the detriment of the environment and people’s lives and finances.”

“We encourage the Biden Administration to stop letting the extremes dictate what must be practical and responsible if we want to preserve America’s energy security and avoid costly mistakes. A faster conclusion to the overdue Five-Year offshore leasing plan for the Gulf of Mexico is another avenue for the Administration to demonstrate again that it values Americans’ needs over an illogical, extremist ideology.”

Consumer Energy Alliance President Expresses Disappointment at the Department of Interior’s Unending Five-Year Plan Delays

Offshore Natural Gas Rig

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA), the leading energy and environmental advocate for families and businesses, expressed disappointment at the Department of Interior’s (DOI) unending delays in releasing a five-year plan for offshore oil and gas leasing. The following statement is attributable to CEA President David Holt.

“It’s unacceptable for the Department of the Interior to keep dragging their feet on securing America’s offshore energy resources. Now more than ever, we need all resources to help lower prices, curtail inflation and provide energy security for American families and businesses. Consumers are still paying nearly $1 more per gallon of gasoline than two years ago, which is unfortunately the result of a long litany of ill-conceived and flawed actions like this one.”

“The Administration is flouting its legal obligation to issue a five-year plan, which is unprecedented. But the real issue is that these efforts when combined with years of anti-energy activists’ posturing to ‘keep it in the ground’ only serves to further harm those in disadvantaged communities or those at or near poverty. When energy become less and less affordable, those who cannot afford to heat their homes or buy gasoline to get to work are the most at risk. It is clearer than ever that ‘keep it in the ground’ only hurts those most at risk – without doing anything to further our environmental progress. This is unconscionable.”

“Missing legally required deadlines by 1.5 years cannot be seen as an accidental procedural issue. This has to be viewed as purposeful. And, in the bright light of objectivity, these actions will not be viewed kindly by future generations.”

“Russia’s actions have shown the world that relying on adversarial nations to deliver less environmentally responsible energy is a dangerous game, putting the U.S. and the world at greater risk. Especially when we now know that world events and failed U.S. policies resulted in carbon emissions in 2022 being among the highest on record.”

“Now more than ever, we should honestly admit that natural gas and oil are ingrained in our economy and in order to meet our most basic needs we must be looking to our own backyard, like the Gulf of Mexico, one of the worlds cleanest production areas, to improve energy security, protect families, lower prices, help curtail inflation, continue our environmental progress and put America’s energy future on a stable and reliable energy footing. Dithering under the guise of carbon reduction is resulting in a failure to ensure affordable, reliable and, especially, environmentally responsible energy.”

Natural Gas Service Ban Could Cost New Mexicans Over $28,000 Per Household

Santa Fe New Mexico Street with Pedestrians

Legislation needed to stop outside activists from pressuring small, local governments to interfere with Energy Transition Act.

SANTA FE, NM – Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA), the leading energy and environmental advocate for families and businesses, today released a report showing that a natural gas ban could cost households in New Mexico more than $28,000 and potentially derail implementation of the state’s landmark Energy Transition Act.

The Hidden Costs of a New Mexico Natural Gas Ban” examines the financial impact of a natural gas ban on a typical household in Las Cruces, using a CEA-developed cost calculator that incorporates open-source, localized data to estimate the cost to retrofit a home to all-electric appliances, depending on the house’s configuration, appliances and other factors. These findings dovetail with previous CEA research showing it would cost Americans $258 billion to replace just four major gas appliances.

“I’ve seen my peers in small local governments in New Mexico and across the country being overwhelmed or bullied by out-of-town activists with similar bans, and it is clear we need a safeguard to keep that from happening so families cannot be bulldozed either,” CEA Southwest Executive Director Matthew Gonzales said. “Anti-energy activists don’t care about the financial impact a natural gas ban would have in a state where nearly a fifth of the people live at or below the poverty line and three-fifths heat their homes with natural gas.

The $28,400 price tag is more than a family of four in poverty makes in a year, and most New Mexicans would have to plan and save for it while they are already struggling with high gas prices and stubborn inflation, he said.

“New Mexico’s ‘minority majority’ population of Hispanics and Native Americans is a strength of our state’s culture, but those same New Mexicans face outsized energy burdens – something anti-energy activists conveniently ignore. Native Americans spend 45% more on energy than the median U.S. household, while Hispanic families pay 20% more,” Gonzales said. “If we’re looking out for communities, this isn’t the way.”

“Those burdens will only grow higher if we knock natural gas out of the mix, which is abundantly produced here in our state, under some of the most environmentally-forward laws and regulations in the country,” Gonzales said. “Whether you agree with the Energy Transition Act or not, it is a model of how to balance environmental ambitions with the fact that our local governments and education system benefit and often rely upon oil and gas revenues.”

“We cannot allow freelance local efforts or outside interference to add more uncertainty and undermine the significant collaboration and compromises New Mexicans have made and will have to keep making to preserve our heritage while simultaneously fostering energy innovation and a truly just transition to the future,” he said.

Natural gas has been pivotal in cutting emissions even as its use grew from 1990-2021, the report shows.

“While we expand our mix of solar and wind, why would we want to limit choice by getting rid of an affordable, reliable and always-on energy source that is already helping us usher in a cleaner future? This legislation ensures our most vulnerable citizens’ energy options aren’t impaired by activists who value ideology over equal access to energy for all. Allowing that kind of thinking to prevail would be an energy injustice,” Gonzales said.

Consumer Energy Alliance Applauds House Efforts to Push Forward Essential U.S. Energy Legislation

Pennsylvania Avenue and United States Capitol

Three hearings underscore critical, immediate need to open up America’s options to solve environmental, energy challenges

WASHINGTON Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA), the leading energy and environmental advocate for families and businesses, applauded the House of Representatives for holding three hearings today to advance legislation essential to meet America’s future environmental and energy challenges without hamstringing innovation or creating higher energy costs.

The scheduled hearings include:

  • Full House Natural Resources Committee consideration of the “Building United States Infrastructure through Limited Delays and Efficient Reviews Act of 2023” (BUILDER Act) introduced by Rep. Garret Graves.
  • A Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources legislative hearing on the “Transparency and Production of American Energy Act of 2023” (TAP Act) proposed by HNR Committee Chair Bruce Westerman and “Permitting for Mining Needs Act of 2023” introduced by Rep. Pete Stauber.
  • Markups on nine pieces of energy legislation by the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Energy, Climate and Grid Security, under full Committee Chair Cathy Rodgers and Subcommittee Chair Jeff Duncan.
  • Markup on seven energy-related bills by the E&C Subcommittee on Environment, Manufacturing, & Critical Materials, under Rodgers and Subcommittee Chair Bill Johnson.

“Thank you to all of the House members involved in moving forward legislation that will define the future of America’s energy and environmental success. These bills, if enacted, will help American families and businesses by increasing energy affordability, grid resiliency, energy security and environmental progress,” CEA Vice President Kaitlin Hammons said. “They will create a structure that improves regulatory consistency and supports all American energy resources including wind, solar, oil and natural gas so that we can keep leading the world with the cleanest energy production and highest total emissions reductions.”

“We urge our elected leaders to prioritize American energy security, reliability and affordability and to speak the truth about energy instead of blaming or bloviating about American companies. The harsh lessons from abroad in Europe and at home in California demonstrate what happens when existing energy sources like oil, natural gas and nuclear are legislated or regulated to the point of artificial scarcity in local markets, which in turn makes them unaffordable.”

“The legislation under discussion puts America on a smarter path by making permitting more transparent and efficient, giving the market more options to solve energy and environmental challenges without price spikes and bolstering our national security by minimizing reliance on dirtier foreign energy. Equally, it will facilitate building the energy infrastructure the future requires, from new electric transmission lines to enable our grid to take more wind and solar power, to pipelines needed to safely move energy from where it’s produced to where it’s needed.”

“CEA stands ready to work with all legislators in pursuit of smart, realistic policies that make affordable, reliable energy and relentless environmental progress for all,” Hammons said.

DOI’s Announcement of New Gulf of Mexico Lease Sale a Good First Step

Two offshore oil rigs during sunset

Scheduling of sale should not have required a second Act of Congress, CEA says

WASHINGTON  – Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA), the leading energy and environmental advocate for families and businesses, issued the following statement in response to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s announcement that it will hold a Gulf of Mexico offshore oil and natural gas lease sale on March 29. It is attributable to CEA President David Holt.

“It has taken an Act of Congress, but the Department of the Interior is finally holding an offshore oil and gas lease sale that will send great signals to global energy markets to help bring Americans lower energy prices and improve energy security. The sale will also help the U.S. increase output from what is proven to be one of the least carbon-intensive production areas in the world while employing American workers.”

“There have been far too many delays to federal oil and gas leasing, which is surprising from an environmental standpoint because the Gulf’s production is far cleaner than anywhere else in the world.”

“There is no argument, even from President Biden, that oil and natural gas will be needed for the foreseeable future. Our task must be meeting our basic energy needs through a diverse variety of resources – including oil and gas – while pressing forward to meet our environmental goals.  Keeping our most environmentally sound oil and gas basin in play to meet current and future demand is critical for environmental progress, as is the addition of offshore wind leasing in the Gulf.”

“The upcoming oil and gas lease sale is a good start that should be quickly followed by the announcement of future lease sales in the Gulf as is legally required under the Congressionally-mandated Five-Year leasing plan. The delays in releasing this plan remain a concern to all Americans. This plan should not be viewed as the bureaucratic equivalent of being forced to eat your vegetables at time when Americans are struggling with high inflation and energy prices.”

Why the Wait for Lower Heating Bills May Last for ‘Months to Come’

Setting the Thermostat

As families and businesses continue to face elevated energy bills, CEA Midwest Executive Director Chris Ventura spoke with MarketWatch on what consumers can expect to see as 2023 progresses.

“Generally, it can take months for lower heating fuel prices to reach consumer bills, “especially for regulated utilities who, by law, have to pass those costs on and neither profit nor lose money when prices rise and fall,” said Chris Ventura, Midwest executive director for the Consumer Energy Alliance, an energy and environmental advocacy group.”

RISEE Act will leverage natural resources to support our natural environment

WASHINGTON  – Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA), the leading energy and environmental advocate for families and businesses, released the following statement of support for the bipartisan Reinvesting in Shoreline Economies and Ecosystems (RISEE) Act.

This legislation, introduced by Senator Whitehouse and Senator Cassidy, would establish several dedicated streams of funding for coastal infrastructure and resiliency by creating a revenue sharing model for offshore wind revenues and increasing revenue sharing for coastal states under the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act (GOMESA).

“The RISEE Act is a significant bipartisan effort to establish more investment in the Gulf States that will boost coastal protection and restoration, hurricane protection programs, and support coastal, marine, and conservation management. CEA applauds Senator Whitehouse and Senator Cassidy for their leadership in bringing this before Congress,” CEA Vice President Kaitlin Hammons said.

“With sponsors from both sides of the aisle, the RISEE Act is the kind of legislation America needs more of – bipartisan, practical and innovative because it leverages our natural resources to support our natural environment. The Gulf of Mexico not only meets many of our energy needs; it is a model of environmental stewardship by being one of the cleanest offshore production basins in the world and is poised to become a contributor of wind power. The revenue it generates is a major contributor to the U.S. Treasury, and it provides hundreds of thousands of jobs.”

“CEA urges Congress to pass this important legislation so we can strengthen conservation, keep improving our environment and support a strong economy by maximizing the Gulf of Mexico’s opportunities for oil, gas and wind to provide the affordable and reliable energy American families and businesses – and our allies abroad – need.”

President Finally Acknowledges That Oil and Gas Are Needed For Years, But Administration Actions Must Support That Reality

U.S. Capitol building at night in Washington, D.C.

Administration can support environment and energy by aligning actions with stated goals

WASHINGTON  – Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA), the leading energy and environmental advocate for families and businesses, issued the following statement in response to the President’s State of the Union Address. It is attributable to CEA President David Holt.

“CEA is pleased to see that President Biden has finally acknowledged the reality that oil and natural gas are going to be needed in America for years. We cannot bring more wind, solar and other forms of renewable energy into our systems and keep the lights on without both of them. CEA is also encouraged by the President’s goal of rebuilding infrastructure and supply chains, which includes pipelines and electric transmission lines, with American-sourced materials.”

“But a goal that makes good headlines is merely talk if his Administration’s actions work against it. Last month’s decision to ban mining at one of the largest copper and nickel deposits in the world, located in Minnesota, makes zero sense when the government is advocating for more electric vehicles and wind and solar power.”

“Blaming energy companies for high prices is no gaffe; it’s a way to shift attention from a record of impeding domestic energy production. The Administration turned to OPEC and Venezuela for oil, let a congressionally mandated federal offshore oil and gas leasing program lapse, allowed permitting logjams to linger and drained our Strategic Petroleum Reserve to the lowest level since the 1980s, in return for minimal price relief. The result? Near-record gasoline prices that contributed to the highest inflation in 40 years, and higher energy prices across the board.”

“CEA encourages the Biden Administration to make good on the rallying cry of ‘Make It in America’ by acting to support that for all industries. We must prioritize environmental progress, regardless of the energy source or method, alongside seeking every avenue to keep energy reliable, abundant and affordable for families and small businesses.”

“Sticking with contradictory and impractical ideas for energy and the environment is straight from the book of bad decisions written by illogical, ideological activists who abhor economic progress. We can do better as a nation, and we should.”
