RALEIGH, NC – Following meetings today between U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke, Governor Cooper, and legislative leaders in Raleigh today, Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA) Southeast Director Tim Page made the following statement:

“It is important for Secretary Zinke to hear from North Carolina leaders as the Department moves forward with the development of a new offshore leasing program – including many who support the inclusion of Atlantic waters into the new plan. There is strong support for Atlantic leasing in North Carolina and we think it is smart for Secretary Zinke to meet with leaders from across the state to discuss how the new plan can keep energy prices low, create jobs, grow the economy, and generate much-needed tax revenues for our state government.

“It is important not only for our decision-makers to discuss this potential plan, it is also important for families and businesses all across the state understand how it could help create jobs, raise wages, and spur economic growth across South Carolina.”

Gooch Bill Making Rooftop Solar More Costly Defended as a Boon to Low-income Consumers

Solar

With new legislation proposed to reform Kentucky’s 14 year-old energy policies, CEA’s Brydon Ross looks at the impact the legislation will have on solar energy adoption across the Commonwealth.

This bill would grandfather in existing private solar customers, through 2042, so no one gets unfairly penalized. It would also continue to reward owners for the excess energy they generate, while aligning incentives with actual competitive electric prices which would ensure fair costs and the reliability of our grid. It will also help solar grow, ensure grid reliability and make sure customer costs are fairly distributed.

Improve Missouri’s Electrical Grid and Limit Rate Increases

Smart Meter

CEA’s Brydon Ross looks at recent legislation to modernize Missouri’s aging energy grid and how the proposed rate caps will save Missouri families money.

Missouri families, households and small businesses could lose $1.6 billion in savings and benefits unless the  Legislature moves ahead with Senate Bill 564 to modernize the state’s grid in 2018.

This legislation would support Missouri’s economy and provide Missourians with never-before-seen limits to their rates in the range of 3 percent — a win for everyone, especially people on fixed incomes.

Sensible Energy Policy Helps Georgia Farmers, Families

Girl Picking Peaches

Bryan Toler, President of the Georgia Agribusiness Council reflects on the importance of the Campaign for America’s Energy to support the affordable, reliable energy which sustains Georgia’s rich agricultural heritage.

Reliable, affordable energy is essential for creating the nutrients and crop protection products we need for crops and protecting the environment.

Every dollar Georgia farmers spend on production translates into the cost of food, as well as our agricultural sector’s ability to employ and support hundreds of thousands of residents and their families. Higher prices on producing agricultural products would make us less competitive in the global market.

CEA’s Brydon Ross recently testified in support of legislation which ensures the sustainable growth of solar energy in Kentucky.

Over time, the structure used to incentivize private solar deployment has led to sustained losses to cover the cost of providing electricity 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Tell Missouri’s Legislature It’s Time To Upgrade Our Energy Grid

Family eating dinner

Tell Your Legislator It’s Time to Upgrade Missouri’s Grid!

Did you know Missouri’s electric utility laws are nearly 100 years old?  Our state’s aging electric infrastructure is also 50 to 60 years old and dated regulations won’t allow it to be upgraded for another 40 years! Even worse, Missouri’s ability to restore power after a storm is among the worst in the nation.

Fortunately, there’s a solution.

Your legislature is considering a bill that will expand customer choices, modernize the grid and prevent power outages with an unprecedented cap on rate increases. If grid modernization with a 3 percent cap on rate increases were passed, the five-year savings for a typical family over the status quo in Missouri would be $850!

Tell your legislators its time upgrade Missouri’s grid!

Dear Senator/Representative,
I’m writing to share my support for an improved electric grid and stress that this is important to my family and my community. It is my understanding that Senate Bill 564 does just that.
Much of Missouri’s electric infrastructure is more than 50 years old. While we are among the nation’s leaders in reliability – when we do get power outages they generally occur because of winter storms or tornadoes – our state is near the bottom in time taken to restore service. We must improve our ability to restore service, while maintaining our excellent reliability record.
Fortunately, this bill offers solutions by helping to update our nearly 100 year-old utility regulatory structure with a forward-looking plan that would generate up to $1.6 billion in savings for families and businesses across the state. With a 3 percent rate cap, typical families like mine can realize $850 in savings over the next five years.
These upgrades for Missouri families would include new electric infrastructure and the inclusion of more smart-grid technologies to prevent power outages, grid security threats and restore power more quickly.
I urge you to pass Senate Bill 564 to bring the Show Me State’s electric grid into the 21st Century for Missouri’s families and communities.
Sincerely,

CEA Applauds Administration for Streamlining and Reducing Regulatory Overlap; Seeks Continued Focus on Greenlighting Infrastructure to Reduce Household Energy Costs

Electric transmission lines

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Ahead of President Trump’s first State of the Union address, Consumer Energy Alliance President David Holt issued the following statement:

“In his first year, President Trump has helped American families and the overall economy by prioritizing energy development and eliminating costly regulatory overlap and redundancy. These efforts by the Trump Administration have already generated an impressive increase in jobs and economic growth, all while helping to reduce households energy costs and expanding our status as a global leader in emission reductions. Indeed, these are key issues Consumer Energy Alliance has long championed and impressive governmental accomplishments the nation should appreciate.

“Still, more works remains. This includes improving our electrical grid, increasing energy storage and production, expanding U.S. energy opportunities both offshore and onshore and streamlining the drawn-out regulatory process for building transmission lines and pipelines. Each of these vitally important initiatives helps families reduce spending more of their take-home pay on energy-related costs, which is especially helpful for those living at the poverty level or fixed incomes

“By focusing on reducing industry-killing governmental red-tape, expanding opportunities for energy development, and addressing safe ways to transport that energy, the Administration continues to emphasize that they are putting America, its families, and its businesses – first. It is imperative we continue our role as the global leader in energy and environmental protection and lower costs for cash-strapped households and seniors does not entail federal spending; rather, we just need to stop getting in our own way with redundant reviews and intentional delays. This Administration and Congress have made significant strides in 2017 to reduce the quantity of these bureaucratic hurdles. We look forward to working to help advance this energy policy leadership in 2018.”
