Expanding Oil, Gas Leasing in Gulf Good for Mississippi

With the federal government evaluating new areas for offshore energy exploration, CEA’s Link Browder discusses how elected officials from all parties need to be able to work together to help lower energy costs and safeguard our environment.

Elected officials can help by streamlining rules and regulations that impede the energy industry’s efforts to lower expenses for businesses and residents alike. But to do this, all sides must come to the table for an honest dialogue — and check their political posturing at the door.

CEA Applauds Marshall County Commission After it Passes Affordable Energy Resolution

Riding an ATV

COLUMBUS, OHConsumer Energy Alliance (CEA) Midwest Executive Director Chris Ventura today applauded the actions of the Marshall County Commissioners after they passed a resolution in support of access to affordable and reliable energy for constituents across the county. The commission also called upon the West Virginia state legislature, to support increased exploration and production of the county’s top resources, including oil and natural gas. Following this news, Ventura released the following statement:

“CEA has long-advocated for policies that not only assist low-income individuals and families to ensure they have access to affordable energy but also for small and large businesses that need affordable energy to meet their bottom lines and compete on a world stage. We’re always happy to see policymakers that take a thoughtful approach to energy development and look at not only the environmental impacts but the long-term opportunities for their citizens.

“West Virginia has a great abundance of energy resources at its disposal and should be taking into account how to best utilize those resources to increase private investment that will help generate revenue for local and state budgets, improve essential services in communities, and increase opportunities for jobs and local economic development.

“The resolution passed by the Marshall County Commissioners shows their willingness to move forward with thoughtful ideas that help create solutions for everyone across the county.”

Dominion Energy Completes Natural Gas Pipeline

Smart thermostat for energy efficiency and conservation

South Carolina households now have access to more natural gas for home heating and cooking as a result of expanding our pipeline infrastructure.

The project will deliver 80,000 dekatherms per day to customers, or enough natural gas to serve about 73,000 households on a typical winter day, Dominion said.

Pipeline Careers, Training Available

We’ve seen Republicans and Democrats come together to discuss the importance of new and modernized energy infrastructure and the jobs these construction projects will support in the Ohio Valley.  Now, technical colleges are reinvesting in their educational programs to support the training of workers.

Interstate pipelines, transmission pipelines and gathering pipelines — oh my!

Throughout the Marcellus and Utica shale region, contractors continue drilling wells, building infrastructure and installing pipelines. So far, billions of dollars have been invested in building pipelines across Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and other states to move the natural gas drawn from the shale formations beneath the surface.

David Holt, CEA’s President, discusses offshore energy exploration with the Express-News and the prospects of new development in the Atlantic.

“This last election, we’ve seen a significant shift at the leadership level,” said David Holt, president of the Consumer Energy Alliance, a trade group representing large energy users and producers. “If you look at the last 10 years, the majority of the governors and the public had been supportive.”

It’s Time to Stop Playing Politics With Our Pocketbooks

Person at Gas Station

Tim Page, CEA Southeast’s Executive Director recently commented on the recent plan to expand offshore energy exploration in the Atlantic.

We need to do find better ways to help residents keep the lights on, the home warm and the gas tank full more affordably – and in more environmentally-friendly ways. Expanded offshore development can do that. In fact, the U.S. Department of the Interior says not having a Mid- or South-Atlantic lease sale could result in up to $3 billion in incremental environmental and social costs, with the U.S. turning to imports to replace nearly 60 percent of the lost production.

Consumer Advocate Expresses Concern with Pipeline Ruling and its Impacts on Energy Delivery

Louisiana bayou tours

Houston, TX — Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA), a national consumer advocate representing families, small businesses, seniors, and households on fixed incomes, expressed concerns regarding a judge’s ruling in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana which would seemingly circumvent the approved regulatory and permitting process and stop construction on the Bayou Bridge Pipeline in the Atchafalaya Basin – a project that has already received all federal approvals – without any explanation. CEA’s President David Holt issued the following statement:

“Pipelines deliver the energy we use to our communities. Without new or expanded pipelines like the Bayou Bridge, families and households struggling to get by risk higher energy costs, impacting their family budgets, their ability to get to work and school, and to keep our economy moving. This decision should be troubling for anyone who cares about prices at the pump, heating and cooling their home, or basic household security. It also raises questions about regulatory consistency as well as predictability and transparency when a federal judge stops a federally approved project without providing a rationale.”

According to a recent media article, the reasoning behind the judge’s decision to halt construction in the Atchafalaya Basin will ‘be assigned at a later date.’ The Bayou Bridge Pipeline has already received approvals to move forward from the Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service with nearly 90 percent of the project’s footprint using existing infrastructure right of way.

Start Building More Pipelines Now

Rail transportation tanker car

Increasing domestic energy production is straining our current energy infrastructure, leading to increased prices and displacing agricultural products on railways.  CEA Midwest Executive Director Chris Ventura discusses how this also effects working families.

Pipelines would also reduce bottlenecks, which would lower energy costs for households, particularly lower-income households who spend a disproportionately large percentage of their take-home pay on energy costs.
