Biden Administration’s Decision to Cancel Offshore Lease Sales a Direct Attack on America’s Economy, Consumer Energy Alliance Says

Outrageous Gas Prices in California

WASHINGTON, D.C.Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA), the leading energy and environmental advocate for families and businesses, expressed disappointment at the Biden Administration’s decision to cancel three offshore lease sales despite record high gasoline prices and 40-year high inflation.

The withdrawal of the sales puts at risk billions of dollars in funding for conservation and the environment. It purposefully disadvantages U.S. energy producers at a time when the world is witnessing what happens when nations curtail their own energy sectors and become reliant on unfriendly nations like Russia. American energy is being shipped to European allies that took far too aggressive steps to curb traditional fuels, which put them largely at the mercy of Russia’s whims.

“The Department of Interior’s claims that it cannot fulfill its legal obligation to hold lease sales is the bureaucratic equivalent of saying the dog ate my homework,” Consumer Energy Alliance President David Holt said. “It is becoming more and more apparent that our nation’s energy policy is fundamentally broken, and the White House’s latest maneuver is proof of that. This reckless course of action is a naked attempt to discourage investment into the clean, responsible American energy that we need right now.”

“Sadly, it is also an attack on families, farmers and small businesses because it will lower the supply of oil and gas, keeping gasoline prices and inflation high for a long time. This is no Putin price hike, this is a self-inflicted wound that is unnecessary, ill-conceived and irresponsible from both an energy and environmental perspective.”

Consumer Energy and Environmental Advocate Encourages Congress to Support Mineral Development for Energy Transition and Diversification

Taconite Mine Along Lake Superior

WASHINGTON, D.C.Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA), the leading energy and environmental advocate for families and businesses, released the following statement as the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources held a hybrid hearing titled, “Reforming the Mining Law of 1872” and considered H.R. 7580, The Clean Energy Minerals Reform Act.

“Thank you to the subcommittee for highlighting the importance of critical minerals to our nation. From cobalt, copper and nickel to silver, lithium and manganese, these minerals are essential to our nation’s energy future, and demand is only growing,” CEA Federal Affairs Advisor Michael Zehr said. “With the World Bank Group estimating mineral production demands could increase by nearly 500% or more by 2050, now is not the time to create uncertainty and additional burdens when consumers need these materials for so many parts of their daily lives.”

“As a conservation leader in the House, we applaud Chairman Raúl M. Grijalva’s commitment to advancing safe, responsible mining and clean energy. We look forward to working with the Committee on policies to accelerate the deployment of new technologies and renewables. However, we are concerned that aspects of this legislation could hinder and disincentivize domestic development of the very minerals needed to support the transition to an energy future with reduced emissions.”

Zehr added: “With the Biden-Harris Administration releasing a new Permitting Action Plan to strengthen and accelerate Federal permitting and environmental reviews, we also urge the committee to consider permitting reform for all energy programs to help support all our energy resources to ensure we meet our needs from a variety of sources.”

New Report Reveals Inflation Slow-down, but Experts Say Prices Remain Steep

A woman checking her coupons in the store

David Holt joined CBS’s Samantha York to talk about the impact higher energy prices are having on Pennsylvanians and how they are dealing with higher costs.

“That magic price number at about $4 a gallon really causes a lot of people in this country to make that hard choice, ‘Do I get a gallon of milk or do I get a gallon of gasoline?’” Holt explained. “So it is inflation, it is taking money, real money, out of real American pockets each and every day.”

CEA’s Top 5 Favorite Energy Stories Last Week – May 6

The top energy stories this week include the effects of rising gas prices on our economy,  what the U.S. government is doing about it, and renewable energy efforts across the nation.

Already frustrated and angry about high gasoline prices, many Americans are being hit by rapidly rising electricity bills, compounding inflation’s financial toll on people and businesses.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine was applauded by CEA for moving one step closer to meeting community and business needs around climate change by signing House Bill 175 into law, which continues Ohio’s leadership in carbon mitigation and environmental stewardship as well as energy production. This new law will allow the state to apply for state control from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to sequester carbon dioxide safely.

A bipartisan group of at least a dozen U.S. senators met on Wednesday to review tax credits for clean energy initiatives, as a part of broader legislation to boost U.S. energy independence and address climate change, lawmakers said.

The Biden Administration’s Aimless Energy Policy Is Gambling With America’s Economy

Father and Daughter Sitting in the Kitchen with Bills

With energy prices rising to unsustainable levels, CEA President David Holt looks at the ineffective political policies that are continuing to drive prices higher while offering practical solutions that will lower prices for all Americans.

The Biden Administration just tripled down on a losing bet to lower gasoline prices for Americans by announcing a record release from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, as if it were a brag-worthy achievement.

At the same time, the Administration continues to gaslight Americans by talking about a “Putin price hike” as if we’d all forget that the first SPR release came in November, well before Ukraine was on anyone’s radar.

Bipartisanship on Federal Offshore Lease Sales Shows Way Forward on Energy Policy, Consumer Energy Alliance Says

Offshore energy production in the Gulf of Mexico

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA), the leading energy and environmental advocate for families and businesses, today applauded two acts of bipartisanship urging the Biden Administration to issue a new five-year leasing plan as soon as possible, with at least two lease sales a year in the Outer Continental Shelf areas of the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska.

Four Democratic Senators voted to approve Motions to Instruct language inserted into H.R. 4521 by Sen. John Barasso (R-WY). Separately, four House Democrats sent a letter to President Biden urging the Department of Interior’s immediate compliance with its statutory obligations to release a five-year plan on time, as required under the Outer Continental Shelf Lands Act of 1953.

“Common-sense bipartisanship used to be a hallmark of U.S. energy policy. Its return could not have come sooner in an era of near-record inflation, record gasoline prices, and amid the increased public realization that energy is a global commodity with world-shaping power,” CEA President David Holt said.

“We thank Senators Kyrsten Sinema, Joe Manchin, Mark Kelly and John Hickenlooper, and Representatives Vicente Gonzalez, Lizzie Fletcher, Sylvia Garcia and Henry Cuellar, for putting the needs of our nation over party demands in their support for a new five-year plan. This complements the bipartisan leadership shown by the Outer Continental Shelf Governors Coalition in their letter last month urging the same.”

“America is the world’s largest oil and gas producer, and as our success in helping our allies in Europe demonstrates, our energy security is critical for our global power and ability to respond effectively to crises,” Holt said. “It’s equally important to our economic security at home, since renewed, rapid U.S. energy production is the fastest route to lower the inflation and high prices that hurt families and small businesses more every day.”

“It has always been foolish to think we should hamper our own oil and gas industry, which works under the strictest environmental regime in the world and is responsible for helping deliver the largest emissions reductions in the world for 20 years,” he said. “We urge the Biden Administration to move quickly to get the five-year leasing plan out on time. That would go a long way toward making good on its assertion that it’s ‘doing all it can’ to lower prices, instead of the ineffectual half-measures we’ve seen so far.”

Consumer Group Applauds New Hampshire Legislature’s Passage of Bill Protecting Consumer Access to Reliable Energy & Critical Infrastructure

Portsmouth New Hampshire

Concord, New HampshireConsumer Energy Alliance (CEA), the leading consumer energy advocate, released the following statement after the New Hampshire House voted to approve SB-424, legislation that will encourage the use of and investment in renewable natural gas (RNG) and RNG infrastructure; and help ensure energy reliability and consumer choice for all Granite Staters. CEA New England Executive Director Marc Brown said:

“Consumer Energy Alliance thanks the New Hampshire legislature for supporting this forward-thinking, bipartisan legislation which will result in increased energy reliability for families and businesses, while safeguarding consumer choice, affordable energy prices and reliability by insulating the state from ill-conceived actions taken by neighboring states that may limit access to natural gas.”

“SB-424 will help give New Hampshire and its gas utilities more options to develop what the future of the natural gas distribution system might look like. This bill is a prime example of how forward-looking legislation can balance our increasing energy demand while reaching our environmental goals,” Brown said.

“RNG will play an important role in the energy transition as we keep innovating and looking for new ways to reduce emissions without harming the affordability and reliability of energy. CEA urges the Governor Sununu to sign SB-424 into law to ensure New Hampshire and its people can count on affordable, reliable energy,” Brown said.

Consumer Energy and Environmental Advocate Applauds Industry for Plans to Develop Offshore Carbon Capture and Storage Hub

Birds flying over the Gulf of Mexico

Houston, TXConsumer Energy Alliance (CEA), the leading energy and environmental advocate for families and businesses, released the following statement after Chevron announced it struck a deal to develop the first offshore carbon capture and storage hub in the United States.

“This agreement is a milestone in America’s world-leading progress in reducing emissions as well as an innovation for the future. CEA applauds Chevron’s foresight in developing a project that will store annually more than all other CCS projects currently active in the country,” CEA President David Holt said.

Holt continued, “Advancements like this in carbon capture technology are how America continues to lead the world in so many spheres and will continue leading the world in emissions reductions while providing families and business with reliable and affordable energy. It is also clear that this type of technology will allow us to continue to be a world leader in energy.”

“Coming on the heels of recent announcements by ExxonMobil, it is increasingly clear that – without excessive governmental intrusion – our environmental goals are in reach. They are not at odds with continued and robust production in the Gulf of Mexico; especially as we find new ways like this to reduce the carbon footprint of what is already the cleanest offshore basin in the world. This type of mitigation is the kind of solution that will get us to the net-zero future we all want quickly.”
