With the Strategic Petroleum Reserve being drained to dangerous levels, CEA’s David Holt discusses how decision makers in Washington could have embraced American energy production to keep our energy supply secure.

“Instead of feckless energy decisions that will hurt Americans, the smart move is using our nation’s natural gas and oil as a tool of national, geopolitical and energy security – which means encouraging production, not killing it with activist-led bureaucracy.”

Calling All Consumers: It’s Time to Recall Our Failing Energy Policies

Senior Citizen Opening Bill

We are in an exciting, evolutionary moment for energy and the environment. Wind and solar power are coming onto the grid at a breakneck pace, carbon capture and storage is taking off, and emissions are continuing their rapid decline.  However, as CEA’s David Holt points out, this progress is imperiled by ideologically-driven energy policies that ignore practical constraints like reliability and affordability for America’s families and businesses.

For too many years, the fact-free, illogical and ideological demands of extremists have played an oversized role in our energy policy dialogue. The modern form of extreme activism is rarely about the stated goal – in this case environmental protection. It is increasingly designed to block economic activity, thwart responsible solutions, and scold people into making radical changes.

The simple fact is we can, must and are marching toward a lower carbon future, while producing more oil and natural gas than ever, and diversifying our energy economy with more wind, solar and soon, nuclear.

OPEC+ Cuts Reveal America’s Broken Energy Policies Hurting Consumers and the U.S. Economy

Woman looking at household bills

WASHINGTONConsumer Energy Alliance (CEA) issued the following statement in response to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Counties (OPEC+) announcing further production cuts, leading oil prices to jump by more than $4 a barrel and hurting consumers everywhere. It is attributable to CEA President David Holt.

“After seeing oil prices surging today after OPEC+ nations and their allies, including Russia, announce surprise production target cuts of about 1.16 million barrels per day (bpd) from May through the rest of the year, it feels like we are once again headed for $100 a barrel oil and high gas pump prices by the summer driving season. The major difference from last year is now we don’t have the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to fall back on, since the Biden Administration drained it to its lowest level since the 1980s in an ineffectual attempt to lower prices before last year’s midterm elections. We have also missed a window to refill the SPR while prices were low, which is outright negligence against taxpayers.”

“This is a dangerous point for the United States, and even worse, it’s self-inflicted. Americans meanwhile, are becoming increasingly poorer in the process. This will hurt those people on fixed incomes and those at the poverty level the most, who don’t have any options and are forced to make hard choices between milk, bread, heating or cooling their homes and a gallon of gasoline. Instead of feckless energy decisions that will hurt Americans, the smart move is using our nation’s natural gas and oil as a tool of national, geopolitical and energy security – which means encouraging production, not killing it with activist-led bureaucracy.”

CEA Applauds Illinois Senators for Supporting Nuclear Energy Development

Nuclear power plant

Senate Bill 76 will help Illinois meet environmental goals and increase energy reliability

Springfield, IL – Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA) issued the following statement in response to the Illinois Senate’s passage of Senate Bill 76, which would end the state’s moratorium on the construction of new nuclear power plants. It is attributable to CEA Midwest Executive Director Chris Ventura.

“With growing concerns about the reliability of our electric transmission system because of the premature retirement of baseload power generation, we applaud the Illinois Senate for taking the first step to end the state moratorium on the construction of new nuclear power plants, first enacted in 1987.”

“Illinois is the nation’s leading state when it comes to the reliable, resilient, carbon-free electricity generated by nuclear power. Ending the moratorium will provide Illinois with additional options to meet their climate goals while ensuring their nuclear-ready workforce is able to build and manage the next generation of small modular nuclear reactors.”

“We encourage the House of Representatives to take the next step in bringing this bipartisan legislation to the floor.”

Families and Businesses Will Benefit from H.R. 1 Energy Package

White House Veto Threat, Misdirection on Consumer Benefits Unhelpful

WASHINGTONConsumer Energy Alliance (CEA), the leading energy and environmental advocate for families and businesses, issued the following statement regarding The White House Office of Management and Budget Statement of Administration Policy on H.R. 1 – Lower Energy Costs Act which is being introduced by Rep. Stephen Scalise (LA) with 43 co-sponsors.

“H.R. 1 is an impressive package of legislation that incentivizes American companies to produce energy in an environmentally responsible way. It represents a step in the right direction toward helping bring down costs while ensuring that our nation’s world-leading environmental rigor is not curtailed,” CEA Vice President Kaitlin Hammons said.

“As a direct result of excessive and unnecessary regulation and a lack of coherent energy policy over the last two years, Americans have faced the highest inflation in a generation and near-record gasoline and electricity prices. These economy-killing prices are in large part due to the excessive hostility toward traditional sources of energy like natural gas and oil that chilled investments.”

“It is an insult to the American people to suggest that the elimination of natural gas and oil will save them money. It is also unhelpful to forestall Congressional debate with threats that limit the legislative art of the possible for the American people. The simple, logical truth is we must diversify our energy resources, while thoughtfully utilizing oil and natural gas, and continue our world-leading environmental performance. All of these can happen simultaneously.”

“H.R 1 will bring much-needed balance and ensure that government agencies follow the law, instead of capitulating to the wish lists of extreme activists whose constituents are not people with bills to pay and families to feed. H.R. 1 will introduce permitting reforms essential for getting the new energy infrastructure and sources we need– from wind to solar to hydroelectric to natural gas pipelines and all things in between – up and running in a reasonable time period,” she said.

“The proposed increases in funding for coastal conservation, hurricane protection and other critical conservation work under the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act (2006) is an important element of this package, and one that will ensure that our energy production creates positive conservation and environmental outcomes at the same time.”

Transmission Reform Can Deliver Resiliency and Affordability to Indiana Consumers

High power electricity grid powering the city

Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA), the leading energy and environmental advocate for families and businesses, today released a report examining the right of first refusal for electric transmission projects, showing the common myths behind regulatory policies and their real-world impact on energy consumers.

“Right of First Refusal for Electric Transmission Projects: Delivering Resiliency and Affordability to Indiana Consumers” assesses how cumbersome processes imposed by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission have hamstrung the development of new regional and inter-regional transmission facilities—transmission critically needed to support the clean energy transition, manage consumer costs, and address concerns about grid resiliency and resource adequacy.

“Electric grids are facing reliability challenges due to a variety of factors from aging infrastructure to an evolving power generation mix,” CEA Midwest Executive Director Chris Ventura said. “With this change comes the necessity to modernize out nation’s electric transmission system in a way that does not increase the energy burden of families, farmers, and local businesses.”

“Consumers need to be protected by ensuring transmission is developed based on realistic cost estimates and unnecessary delays in permitting modernized electric infrastructure do not compromise the reliability they deserve,” said Ventura.

Transmission reform has become a key policy item at both the federal and state level in recent years, as the national push toward new forms of clean generation increasingly demands a rethinking of how transmission has traditionally been planned and developed. The National Academies of Science estimates transmission capacity needs to increase by 60 percent this decade.

Line 5 Army Corps Delay Excessive, and Slows Path to Lake Michigan’s Safety

Detroit Skyline Aerial View With Lighthouse, Marina, and River

Adding a year and half of review for a tenth of an acre of wetlands is the definition of overkill

DETROIT  – Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA), the leading energy and environmental advocate for families and businesses, issued to following statement regarding the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ decision to further lengthen the environmental review for the Line 5 Tunnel project. It is attributable to CEA Midwest Executive Director Chris Ventura.

“We’re glad the Army Corps of Engineers is doing its due diligence and listening to public concerns. However, adding more than a year to the process is not helping anyone, especially since there is strong public support to get Line 5 in a tunnel in the bedrock beneath Lake Michigan, and out of the Straits of Mackinac.”

“The safety of Lake Michigan is of paramount importance, which means there is no good reason for further delay. It should be clear to all by now that certain interests are looking for any and all reasons – including false claims about safety – to satisfy their misguided political agenda to stop this vital project. That would be environmental self-defeat, because blocking the Line 5 tunnel would force the energy it carries to be delivered via less safe, higher-emitting means of transportation.”

“It’s unprecedented that the Corps – which first got the Line 5 tunnel application in 2020 – needs almost six years to review a project that touches a tenth of an acre of wetlands and requires no construction in the waters of the Straits. There is a huge gap between exhaustive and excessive, and this decision leaps right over it.”

“While some parts of the Biden Administration are in Canada now touting its climate plan, another part of it is slowing down a project that, if blocked, would lead to disastrous economic consequences for Canadian citizens in Ontario. Like many in the U.S., Ontarians rely on Line 5 for reliable, affordable energy every day.”

Natural Gas Service Ban Could Cost Pennsylvanians Almost $29,000 Per Household

New CEA Analysis Shows the Impact a Natural Gas Ban Would Have on Pennsylvania Families and Consumers

HARRISBURG, PA – Consumer Energy Alliance (CEA), the leading energy and environmental advocate for families and businesses, today released a report showing that a natural gas ban could cost households in Pennsylvania almost $29,000.

The Hidden Costs of a Pennsylvania Natural Gas Ban” examines the financial impact of a natural gas ban on a typical household in Harrisburg, using a CEA-developed cost calculator that incorporates open-source, localized data to estimate the cost to retrofit a home to all-electric appliances, depending on the house’s configuration, appliances and other factors. These findings dovetail with previous CEA research showing it would cost Americans $258 billion to replace just four major gas appliances.

With two in three Pennsylvania households using natural gas for home heating, banning natural gas would be devastating to families forced to pay more than $29,000 to involuntarily reconfigure their homes and purchase new appliances,” CEA Mid-Atlantic Director Mike Butler said. “That is an economically self-defeating idea for Pennsylvania, which has the country’s second largest gas reserves, which are produced with rigorous environmental standards and keep prices low.”

“The only result will be higher bills for everyone, including the 12% of Pennsylvanians who live at or below the poverty level, those in disadvantaged communities or on fixed incomes, and families and businesses struggling with high gas prices and stubborn inflation,” Butler said.

“If the goal is forcing a cost on Pennsylvanians that is more than a family of four in poverty makes in a year, and for which most people would have to scrimp and save, then a ban makes sense. In any context other than the fictional utopian multiverse imagined by the extremists who shill these bans, it makes no sense at all.”

Natural gas has been pivotal in cutting emissions even as its use grew from 1990-2021, the report shows. Pennsylvania’s emissions of criteria pollutants have decreased across the board, the analysis shows.

“Natural gas will help us evolve toward the cleaner future we all want, with emerging technologies like renewable natural gas (RNG) and hydrogen blending. As America’s energy mix evolves and incorporates more wind and solar, we hope our elected officials remember that limiting energy choice make prices increase for consumers and families. Natural gas is and will always be an ingredient for lower costs and constant environmental improvement,” Butler said.
